Florida's Governor Ron DeSantis is among a number of leading conservative Republican politicians from across the nation to criticize the latest move by the Biden administration - the creation of a Disinformation Governance Board that will form a part of the Department for Homeland Security (DHS).

The announcement has followed in the wake of the purchase of Twitter by Elon Musk in the last 2 weeks.

Speaking on April 29, the Governor referenced the latest move by the federal government to tackle the effects of misinformation and 'fake news' in the U.S. via the creation of a government department tasked with weeding out information that's deliberately planted and spread so as to mislead.

Gov. DeSantis shared that his first instinct on hearing of the board, was that it must be a "belated April Fool's Joke".

Tackling disinformation and fake news

The Disinformation Governance Board was first announced in various congressional hearings this week, by Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas of the DHS.

Some of its stated aims are to:

  • Tackle misinformation surrounding immigration issues, which has led to surges of migrants arriving at the border;
  • To deal with Russian disinformation around elections and COVID-19, as well as the war in Ukraine;

Since the announcement, various conservative Republican politicians including Lauren Boebert and others, have been quick to air their opinions, many of them comparing the idea to the Ministry of Truth, a fictional branch of the government portrayed in George Orwell's dystopian novel "1984."

Criticism not restricted to Republicans either

It would appear that the cynicism over the merits of the Disinformation Governance Board isn't confined to members of the Republican party either - various Democrats have weighed-in with comments too. Democrat Tulsi Gabbard, a former presidential candidate and Democrat from Hawaii appeared on TV, describing the creation of an effective 'Ministry of Truth' as a propaganda arm of government, and a stepping stone to dictatorship.

She shared her views on Twitter:

With such widespread objections and criticism from across the political spectrum, it remains to be seen whether the Disinformation Governance Board will achieve very much other than to make the Biden administration increasingly unpopular.

As Governor DeSantis was keen to point out in a tweet on the subject:

"Florida rejects Biden’s attempt to enforce regime-approved narratives and to stifle dissent."

What do you think about the federal government trying to censor information available to the general public? Do you think it is necessary or is it an overreach of control? Let me know in the comments section below.
