A Florida Highway Patrol police dog named Titan is being hailed as a hero, after he helped officers detect and seize around $700,000 worth of the drug heroin on April 26.

Officers had stopped a vehicle that turned out to have fake Arizona license plates fixed to it. As the FHP officers questioned the vehicle's occupants, Titan the K-9 must have detected the drugs - around 5.5 pounds of it in sealed bundles - and alerted the officers to the illicit cargo.

The occupants of the vehicle - a male (33) and a female (19) - have both been found to be illegal immigrants from Mexico. They were arrested and have been charged with trafficking in heroin, distribution of heroin and possession of a vehicle for drug trafficking.

As of now, the pair remains in custody in Hernando County. Meanwhile Titan the K-9 has earned himself some well-deserved praise.

K-9 units and drug seizures

Almost exactly a year ago, another Florida police K-9 was instrumental in the seizure of a large shipment of marijuana - almost 40 pounds of it. The drugs were detected in luggage that had arrived aboard a commercial aircraft at Jacksonville airport.

How the marijuana managed to make it through airport security and onto the plane in the first place was baffling to Florida law enforcement officers.

The drugs were detected by Zena, a police K-9 from the Nassau County Sheriff's Office. Like Titan, Zena is also a German Shepherd - a breed favored by police forces all over the world.

It seems that thanks to police K-9 units like Zena, and now Titan, the supply of drugs in Florida will be curtailed at least a little!
