The gator had claimed the house already

Construction workers who were putting the finishing touches to a South Florida home recently in readiness for an open house to sell the property, when they got a nasty surprise. An 11-foot gator had taken up residence in the master bedroom suite!

The realtor tasked with selling the home shared some pictures of the incident on Facebook.

House for sale - comes with one resident gator

The home is in Babcock Ranch in the Fort Myers area of Lee County where similar homes sell for $1.5 million. Construction workers were completing cosmetic jobs like putting up blinds and so-on, when the enormous reptile was discovered lurking in a corner. Professional trappers were called and two of them eventually caught the beast using ropes and dragged it from the property.

It's thought that the cold-blooded gator may have entered the empty building to shelter from a spell of cold weather. Needless to say, it had to be removed before the realtor could invite prospective buyers in to view the home!

Gators are prolific near Fort Myers

Floridians living in the Fort Myers area are used to living in relatively close proximity to gators, and while this 11-foot specimen is a big one, larger ones do appear from time to time.

Earlier in March, a Texan hunter bagged a 12-foot gator while hunting near Lake Okeechobee. The animal in question was estimated to be over 60-years-old and was known to have taken and eaten a couple of cattle from a nearby farm.

Attacks on humans are rare

Regardless of how ferocious they appear, attacks by alligators on humans are relatively rare.

A 2005 study reported just 376 alligator attacks since 1948. In Florida, gator attacks were on the increase from around 6 per year in 1971 to around 10 per year between 1987 and 2017.

With that said, it was still likely a shock to all involved when the gator showed up in the Fort Myers home!
