Miami police have arrested a Florida realtor on Thursday December 23, in connection with multiple shootings of homeless people in south Florida.

Willy Suarez Maceo, 25-years of age is charged with callously hunting homeless people and maliciously shooting them at random. He is the chief suspect in a double shooting on December 21 of two homeless people - one who survived and the other who tragically did not.

Evidence so far suggests that Maceo's car was caught on video surveillance footage at the scene of both shootings and police have confirmed the same gun was used in both attacks too.

Shot while they slept

The shocking attacks demonstrate a complete lack of humanity and empathy - little surprise then that Maceo has been termed a serial killer. Miami police are now investigating links between him and another homeless shooting from October of this year.

Reports suggest that he drove around the Miami area in his black Dodge Charger, pulling up only to shoot at nearby homeless men. The victim of one of Tuesday's shootings, which occurred in the downtown area has survived. A second victim, was shot while he slept on the sidewalk in Wynwood.

The problem of homelessness in Florida

Homelessness is a problem that affects all states, particularly in the aftermath of the pandemic when so many have lost their jobs or suffered other losses in their lives. The state's favourable climate means that many who lose their homes feel they'll manage better in Florida thanks to its climate.

It emerged in November that 1 in 100 homeless children in the US now lives in the Orlando area. Earlier in November it was reported that significant numbers of South Florida seniors are being made homeless due to escalating living costs.

The effect is that a large number of people find themselves living on the streets which is hard enough, without having to worry about the threat of bullies like Maceo who seem intent on threatening them with violence or murder for no reason at all. Data from Statista suggests that between 15 and 20 homeless people are randomly murdered in the US in an average year - which is tragic in itself.

Time will tell what happens in the case of Willy Suarez Maceo, and whether he's linked to further homeless shootings.
