Renfield is a comedy-horror film that stars Nicolas Cage (Leaving Las Vegas, National Treasure, The Croods), Nicholas Hoult (The Great, X Men, Warm Bodies) and Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians, Oceans 8, Shang Chi ) that was filmed in and is also set in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The movie follows R.M Renfield (Hoult) who has been Count Dracula's (Nicolas Cage) unhappy assistant for almost a hundred years. After an incident at a New Orleans bar, Renfield meets Rebecca Quincy (Awkwafina), a traffic cop with whom he falls in love with. With his newfound happiness and lease on life, Renfield decides that he has had enough and finally stands up to Dracula in hopes of being able to break free of his toxic relationship and long-standing service to his evil boss.
Filming for Renfield began in and around the city of New Orleans on February 3rd, 2022 and wrapped on April 14th, 2022. There are notable scenes in the Renfield's trailer that feature the CBD and famous Jackson Square.
The screenplay for Renfield was written by Ryan Ridley (Rick and Morty) and was directed by Chris McKay (The Lego Batman Movie, Robot Chicken) It is based on an idea by Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead) and features characters from Bram Stoker's gothic novel Dracula, written in 1897.
Renfield is rated R and will premiere next week at the Overlook Film Festival in New Orleans on Thursday, March 30th. Renfield had a budget of $86.2 million and is scheduled to be released in theaters by Universal Pictures on April 14th, 2023.
