During the Superbowl, actor and comedian Melissa McCarthy appeared in a hilarious ad for Booking.com

The ad is a full-blown musical number. Late-night scrolling turns into a full-fledged musical number, with actress Melissa McCarthy leading the charge.

As McCarthy scrolls through her phone late at night looking for hotels on Booking.com, the commercial cuts to a fantasy scene. McCarthy “travels” to exciting destinations around the world, singing about how she’ll go “Somewhere, anywhere!”

Why, the viewer wonders, is she so desperate to travel? Maybe the commercial is about our travel-obsessed post-covid world?

The final moments of the commercial, though, deliver an SNL-worthy punchline. McCarthy is willing to go literally anywhere, as long as there’s childcare!

WHY IT WORKS

First and foremost, let’s talk about the music. The catchy tune, complete with backup singers and dance numbers, is impossible to resist.

It draws the viewer in and creates a sense of excitement and possibility. The lyrics, too, are clever and relatable, capturing the spirit of wanderlust and adventure that so many of us feel, but leaving us wondering about McCarthy’s needs.

At the end, we realize that Melissa’s character is a woman on the brink, desperate for a break from the daily grind. And who among us can’t relate to that?

The message is clear: it’s time to put yourself first and take that long-awaited vacation. And the implication is that with Booking.com’s platform, you can treat yourself and do just that.

Where would you want to travel this Summer? Anywhere at all?
