According to a message obtained by this reporter and reportedly sent by Gregory Gardens Elementary School principal Katie Koontz, an "agitated man" entered the school's campus this week. The man was escorted off the campus of the Pleasant Hill, California elementary school, and a gate providing exterior access to the campus was secured.
The message reports, however, that an unknown party cut the lock on the gate shortly after it was secured.
The message read:
An Important Message from Ms. Koontz, Principal - Gregory Gardens Elementary
Greetings Parents and Community,
Earlier today, we had an agitated man come on our campus. I immediately approached the man, offered support, and then escorted him off campus. For the safety of our staff and school grounds, we locked the gate to the neighborhood. It was our intention to reopen the gate at the end of our day after staff and students were no longer present. Unfortunately, shortly after securing the campus by locking the rear gate, the lock to the gate was cut off.
We take the safety of our staff and campus very seriously and we will continue to make every effort to ensure teachers, students and parents feel safe here. We value our community and want everyone to be able to use our facilities during this strange time. In the meantime, our campus is open to our community after school hours (4:30 pm - 7:00 pm).
We look forward to seeing our families on campus soon.
From the email, it was not immediately clear what security steps had been taken to ensure the campus' continued safety.
