30-year-old Makuach Yak is a seventh-grade travel-basketball coach from South Sudan who runs a non-profit that builds basketball courts for children in East Africa.
On Friday evening, May 19, 2023, his business partner and roommate, Tate Van Roekel, dropped Makuach off at their place on SW 10th Avenue in Delray Beach, Florida. Tate planned to pick hm up the following morning at 8:00 am for a basketball tournament. When he arrived, Mukuach was gone.
“His wallet and keys and cellphone, Apple Watch, were all on the counter, just sitting there,” Tate told reporters.
Family and friends state is unusual behavior for Makuach to just disappear and would never miss the basketball tournament without explanation.
“He’s very responsible,” Tate told reporters. “If he says he’s going to do something, he’s going to do it. He’s very scheduled, very detailed, very smart and thinks things through, and is trying to be a step ahead usually."
Security cameras caught Makuach on video in his front yard dressed in a purple Nike shirt, black running shorts, long white Nike socks, and black Nike running shoes. They believe he went for a run around 6:30 am. He is an All-American cross-country star and was likely going for an early morning run.
Makuach is 6'4" and weighs 160 pounds. There is currently a $20,000 reward being offered for his safe return.
His loved ones have created a Facebook page dedicated to locating Makuach:
