Short Story

The construction of this prison started in 1886 and 24 years later the Mansfield Reformatory was born. In 1910 the new Ohio State Reformatory broke a world record with 6 levels cell blocks.

The Castle was originally designed by Levi Scofield who described it as “half German castle, half Gothic church”. He believed, his creation will provide spiritual uplift while other prisons focused on revenge and suffering. The Reformatory was meant to be about motivation, rehabilitation and mercy. As a side, it’s ironic the “spiritual” prison became a ghost magnet.

In December 1990 when it was closed via federal court order, as a result of a prisoners' class action suit citing overcrowding and inhumane conditions. It sat empty for several years until local activists purchased the building from the state (for $1) and committed to repairing and restoring this historic structure. Now it serves as a museum.
