The desert is more than just sand and cactus. There is a myriad of plants and minerals in the environment that has been used for ages by the indigenous people of the area. With the wealth of natural resources at our fingertips here in the desert, it's no wonder there aren't more beauty brands from Phoenix and Tucson. In an effort to shop local, I went on the hunt for beauty brands I could support that hail from the Arizona desert. Some are more popular than others, but they all have a focus on ingredients and quality formulations.
Phoenix based skincare brand Herbal Dynamics Beauty focuses on making natural, unique, and effective skincare. They pride themselves on being additive-free, meaning no phthalates, sulfates, and parabens in the formulations. They are also cruelty-free, with no testing of products on animals. A number of their products are also fragrance free, which helps decrease irritation for those with sensitive skin. Herbal Dynamics' best sellers are the CollagenR8 CoQ10 Facial Toner ($24) and Rosewater Calming Facial Toner ($12). They carry shea butter body moisturizers and many other high-quality skincare products.
Another skincare brand that hails from Arizona is Whish beauty. They also tout a line of skincare products that are derived from natural botanicals, without harsh ingredients that are often found in drugstore brands. The brand is headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona. They carry a wide range of skincare and body care products. They are known for their great self-tanning products, which gradually give you a glow with consistent use. Whish started out with just shaving products and has expanded into skincare with bakuchiol, body care with coconut milk, and gentle hand sanitizers. I'm personally a big fan of the Lavender Body Butter ($18). It smells amazing and leaves my skin soft and supple.
A Tucson-based brand, Mikel Kristi considered itself an eco-luxe skin care brand. The founder, Kristi Hall, is a board-certified Nurse Practitioner that specializes in skin rejuvenation and renewal at her aesthetics medspa in Tucson. The brand itself focuses on high-grade ingredients that offer real results. Included in the best seller line are the Bio Peptide Revitalizing Serum ($83) and Vitamin C Radiance Moisturizer ($85). You can snag the Core Line for $295, which comes with a 4-step skincare routine. I love that Mikel Kristi offers travel and starter kits to try the line before investing in it.
Another Scottsdale-based brand, Emme Diane is the namesake of esthetician Emme Diane Linehan. She created the line to help target her client's specific skin care needs. The brand has been highlighted in New Beauty and InStyle magazines. You can even schedule an appointment for a consultation with Emme Diane to get a specialized skin care routine set up for you. Bestsellers for the brand include the Sulfur Refining Mask ($40), Gentle Cleanser ($24), and Hydraluxe Cream ($40). The premise that this brand wants to make skincare unique to each user is a great way to find solutions to very personal skin issues.
This brand breaks down into three smaller brands. Butter + Fig makes natural soaps and body lotions. Sugar Berrie Body focuses on facial products like avocado face masks and pineapple jelly face masks. And Buck + Tweed is a natural skincare line targeted at men. All together these brands have natural ingredients, fun scents, and are created in small batches. They carry bath truffles (similar to a bath bomb), body oils, body scrubs, and other natural soap products. I can only imagine how amazing this line must smell! They're based out of Phoenix, Arizona and the small batch, hand crafted products have rave reviews.
These brands are just a sample of the many great skincare and beauty brands that have started in Arizona. Check out local boutiques and markets to find more local artists and creators to continue to support local businesses. Your skin will thank you!
