During an hour-long session of public comments, speakers strongly urged the Stanton City Council to pass a resolution in support of the Palestinian people of Gaza at Tuesday night’s meeting.

Councilmember Donald Torres requested a discussion on the creation of the item at the Nov. 14 meeting and received praise from speakers in the public comments. The resolution would support the Palestinian people of Gaza, call for a ceasefire in Israel and Palestine, and summarize the conditions of the conflict.

Mayor Pro Tem Hong Alyce Van urged the council to hear from all sides before passing the resolution.

“I want this to pass. That’s why I want to make sure we get a substitute motion that is acceptable by the majority,” said Van.

The council made a motion to move forward. Mayor David Shawver abstained from voting.

“I think my only disappointment was that I didn’t see many of our residents here, and as you know, we are local government representing all the people in our team,” said Shawver.

Additionally, the council agreed to continue broadcasting city council meetings with plans to improve the quality of audio and video and include timestamps and presentation slides.

Shawver requested a discussion for the next council meeting on how the city can enforce regulations for those operating without business licenses.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the council is set for Tuesday, Dec. 12.
