This new month starts off with more outdoor activities, from another fishing derby to a winter fun day and more. If you are looking to get the kids out of the house, there are activities available for that. If you are looking for something to do, there is something for everyone, and there are activities for all ages. Saturday, March 4th

Bangor: There will be a craft fair at the Bangor Elks Club, 108 Odlin Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Belfast: Music Together will be held at the Belfast Free Library, 106 High Street, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. This is a free class with a music teacher leading families in circle songs, instrument play, and rhythm.

Brewer: American Legion Post 98 is having a fundraiser dinner at the Joseph L. Ferris Community Center Brewer Auditorium, 318 Wilson Street, from 5 to 7 p.m. The menu is spaghetti and meatballs, with seatings at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. The dinner is $8 per person in cash at the door.

Bridgton: Winter Fun Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Peabody-Fitch Woods Narramissic Farm on 46 Narramissic Road. Loon Echo Land Trust is offering a day of winter activities. There will be free adaptive and non-adaptive cross-country ski gear, fat bikes, and snowshoes, as well as an opportunity to sled. Volunteers will be on hand to teach cross-country skiing basics. This event is free, but please register here. The snow date is Sunday, March 5th.

Cambridge: The Cambridge Baptist Church, 9 North Road, will have the community clothes closet from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. There will be free clothing for infants to adults.

Greenville: The 2nd annual Greenville Firefighters Moosehead Lake Ice Fishing Derby will be held this weekend at Moosehead Lake. Saturday the derby will be from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Registration and weigh-in stations are at the Greenville Fire Department, 10 Minden Street. $15 per person or $30 for a family. There will be cash prizes and door prizes.

Sunday, March 5th

Greenville: The 2nd annual Greenville Firefighters Moosehead Lake Ice Fishing Derby will be held this weekend at Moosehead Lake. Sunday the derby will be from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration and weigh-in stations are at the Greenville Fire Department, 10 Minden Street. $15 per person or $30 for a family. There will be cash prizes and door prizes.

Westbrook: Winter Fest is being held at Riverbank Park, 677 Main Street, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This free event will have inflatable slides, a petting zoo, horse and wagon rides, bounce houses, food vendors, face painting, a s'mores station, music, a photo booth, an ice skating rink, and scheduled performances. Because of the upcoming snowstorm, this event was moved from Saturday, March 4th to Sunday, March 5th.

Things to do in Maine This Weekend 3/25 and 3/26

With the final weekend of March upon us, there are plenty of activities to choose from this weekend. It is Maine Maple Weekend, so you can take a tour of a local sugarhouse and see how your maple syrup is produced. Migrant Stash House Discovered in Maine

Border Patrol announced Maine agents discovered a human smuggling attempt Wednesday in Lisbon, Maine, which is located in Androscoggin County. Border patrol agents were able to identify a house in Lisbon that was being used to house undocumented migrants, and border patrol removed 17 migrants from the house. The migrants were from Nicaragua and Guatemala.

Transgender Cyclist Wins NYC Cycling Event Renewing the Debate over Biological Men Competing in Women's Sports

This past weekend, transgender female Tiffany Thomas won the Randall's Island Crit cycling road race that is held in New York City. There are three races in the series. This issue caused former elite female cyclist Hannah Arensman to quit cycling. Hannah was racing in the elite women's category at the UCI Cyclocross National Championships held in December 2022. Arensman came in fourth, with two transgender riders taking third and fifth place. One of those riders finished in front of Hannah after having had several physical interactions throughout the race. Arensman says she has felt deeply angered, disappointed, overlooked, and humiliated that the rule makers of women's sports do not feel it is necessary to protect women's sports to ensure fair competition for women anymore.

The Future of the Flagpole of Freedom Park

The Worcester family, best known for starting the nonprofit Wreaths Across America, revealed their plans for the Flagpole of Freedom Park last year. The park will contain 55 memorial parks organized by state and territory, and each of the parks will have memorial walls with the names of every veteran in history displayed. This park will also be the only landmark located in the United States that honors all of the American veterans who have died over the last 250 years, regardless of the length of their service or whether or not they died in service. The Flagpole of Freedom Park proposal says it is not a theme park or an adventure park. It is an immersive, tech-driven museum, unlike anything that currently exists in our country today. Flagpole of Freedom Park is an educational venture that will humanize and personalize the stories of American veterans, provide an immersive experience to learn about American history and teach future generations about the milestones and moments that have shaped our nation’s history. The park and memorial walls will be free to the public, with optional areas that will offer educational experiences and entertainment that will be available for admission with a purchased ticket. The park will also offer four-season outdoor recreation opportunities such as hiking and biking trails, cross-country skiing, and sledding.

Former President Trump Speaks out on His Upcoming Legal Case

Former President Donald Trump posted today to his Truth social media account that he will be arrested on Tuesday. The Department of Justice did decline to prosecute Trump for the charge that New York Attorney General Alvin Bragg is charging him with. The charge is falsifying business records for the $130,000 payment Trump's then-attorney Michael Cohen paid to Stormy Daniels. The statute of limitations on the charge is 2 years, and this happened 7 years ago. The Trump base is still polling at 40% support for the former president.

High School Girls Basketball Team Banned From Competition After Protesting Against Team With Transgender Player

The Mid-Vermont Christian School is a private Christian school that withdrew from the Vermont Division IV state basketball tournament after they refused to play against the Long Trail School team, which has a transgender student. The head of the Mid-Vermont Christian School, Vicky Fogg, said, “We believe playing against an opponent with a biological male jeopardizes the fairness of the game and the safety of our players." "Allowing biological males to participate in women’s sports sets a bad precedent for the future of women’s sports in general.”

Biden will Sign a new Executive Order to Reduce Gun Violence

President Biden will be signing his latest Executive Order today to strengthen background checks and take other steps he says will reduce gun violence. Biden will give a speech today in which he will talk about his executive order in Monterey Park, where a gunman went into a nearby dance hall and shot 20 people during a Lunar New Year celebration in January.

Interior Department Approves the Willow Project

Much to the dismay of many on TikTok, the Interior Department has approved the Willow Project. Environmentalists were trying hard to stop this project, and there was a petition started on Change.org to stop it. The Willow Project is a proposal from Conoco Phillips that would allow for drilling for oil and gas in Alaska. This proposal was for one of the largest drilling operations on public land. The area where the drilling is proposed is on the North Slope of the state. This project will produce 180,000 barrels of oil a day along with 2500 union construction jobs. The project that was approved was trimmed down from the original proposal, which was for five drilling sites. The Interior Department cut that down to three drilling sites.

Maine Women and Man From the Dominican Republic Arrested Tuesday for Fentanyl After Undercover Investigation

The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, along with the Penobscot County Sheriff and other law enforcement agencies, have been investigating an out-of-state drug trafficking organization that has been responsible for distributing large amounts of fentanyl in Hancock, Somerset, Piscataquis, and Penobscot counties. During the investigation, the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency arrested and charged over a dozen people who were connected to the group. Several pounds of fentanyl and tens of thousands of dollars in illegal drug proceeds were seized.

Protests Again Today Against the Police Public Safety Training Center Known as "Cop City" and Update on Court Hearing

UPDATE:The 23 people arrested Sunday for protesting appeared in court today. The judge denied bail for all but one of the 23. The lawyer for the Southern Poverty Law Center was granted bail, which was set at $5,000. The rest of the 22 protestors will continue to remain in jail.

Border Crisis Continues With a Border Agent Being Assaulted

A female Border Patrol agent was assaulted by a male illegal immigrant over the weekend as she attempted to take him into custody. The Border Patrol agent was injured on her arms and face and she was taken to the hospital for treatment. According to CBP On March 4, 2023, at approximately 4:00 a.m., a U.S. Border Patrol agent assigned to the Tucson, Arizona Sector took a subject into custody near Foudy Road and State Route 92, after investigating the subject’s illegal entry into the U.S. While being placed in a service vehicle, the subject assaulted the agent, injuring the agent’s face and hands. Additional agents responded and took the suspect into custody. The FBI and Cochise County Sheriff's Office are also investigating the incident. For the current fiscal year of 2023, there have been 174 assault incidents on Border Agents.

USA Powerlifting Loses Lawsuit and Must Let Trans Athlete Compete in Female Events

In 2019, trans athlete Jaycee Cooper filed a discrimination claim against USA Powerlifting with the Minnesota Department of Human Rights through Gender Justice after USA Powerlifting banned Cooper and all other trans women athletes from competing in the USA Powerlifting women's competitions. In filing charges with the Minnesota Department of Human Rights, Gender Justice said that USA Powerlifting violated the Minnesota Human Rights Act by banning Cooper, and all other trans women athletes from competing in women’s competitions. On behalf of Cooper, Gender Justice was seeking protection from discrimination and a clear, fair standard that allows trans athletes the opportunity to compete in the category of their gender identity.
