Maine Department of Public Safety which oversees the public safety bureaus in the state of Maine added a very cute and furry member to their team this week. Baxter is a 5-month-old chocolate lab that has joined the Department of Public Safety. Baxter will be a part of the dispatch team and he is going to become Maine's first comfort dog for emergency communication centers in the towns of Augusta, Bangor, and Houlton.
Baxter will have a busy job providing support to first responders, emergency telecommunicators, and the community. Baxter was a rescue dog and he is still in training and he is being trained by Hero Pups. Baxter will continue his training until April 2023 when he turns one and then he will officially start working. Hero Pups is a New Hampshire 501 all-volunteer non-profit organization that provides support dogs to veterans and first responders in New England. The organization was founded by Laura Barker after her son was wounded in Afghanistan. Many Hero Pups puppies are rescued from shelters and rescue agencies.
Hero Pups is a 100% volunteer organization and no one is paid which allows them to use 100% of the funds they receive to train and pair dogs with eligible veterans and first responders. If you would like to help out Hero Pups they could use more volunteers. Hero Pups can use help off-site with administrative tasks such as contacting volunteers by email or phone, organizing volunteers for events, and entering data into spreadsheets. Hero Pups is also looking for craft volunteers off-site that would like to help to do projects such as sewing patches onto shirts, assembling custom dog leashes, and making dog collar charms. Volunteer tradespeople are also needed to do work such as repairs and upgrades to the facility, constructing kennels, and laying fences at their New Hampshire facility. If you would like to volunteer for these types of projects please fill out this volunteer form and they will contact you if there is an opening.
