The 2024 herring spawn run is set to start soon. The first season rains usually marks the start of the season. Every year millions of migrating herring make their way into he San Francisco bay to spawn? Herring spawns occur once a year from December until late March.

The annual herring spawn marks an important cycle in San Francisco bay. In winter the pacific herring sparks life into the waters of San Francisco Bay from Sausalito, Ferry point and all along the shoreline of San Francisco Bay.

This week we continue the great Dungeness crab hooping before commercial season opens in December. The reality of crabbing is that it isn't always rainbow and butterflies but if you grind you will eventually shine. See all the fun and exciting action on this weeks episode of TLA.

Dungeness Crab Limits Still the Rule | Hot Crabbing Continues 

Here are 5 quick tips to help you deshell a crab to get nice delicious white lump meat. 

1) Make sure to steam up or boil the crab then ice it immediately to cool down the meat. This process will help the meat to stop over cooking. 

2) Crack the crab along the fissure lines. It will expose the chambers where the meat is held.These are natural break points in the crab.

3) Each crab abdominal chamber is designated by a triangle. Crack at the triangle to expose the adnominal chamber meat.Peel back the triangle clockwise to expose the abdominal meat

4) Remove the cartilage that the meat is held onto. This will allow the leg meat to slide out easily and into large lumps.

5 Chill the meat in the refrigerator for a few hours and serve!

Welcome to this episode of TLA. On this episode we explore the wonderful world of TELSA camping for the first time. On my way to travel to Southern California to try my hand at a few more spiny lobsters for the 2023/2024 season.

2023 Kayak Crabbing Season Starts with a Boom! - Limits All Around

Did you know there are millions of square miles of land available to camp for FREE!

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) was established on July 16, 1946. It was created through the consolidation of two existing agencies: the General Land Office and the Grazing Service. The Bureau manages approximately 245 million acres of public land, primarily located in the western states.

ON BLM land Developed Campgrounds do require a fee but offer amenities such as campsites, rest rooms, picnic tables, fire rings and sometimes even RV hook ups.     

However the Bureau of Land Management also allows dispersed camping in many areas, which means camping outside of designated campgrounds. In some cases, dispersed camping on BLM land may be free. No fighting for camp spots, long wait lines, months of advance booking. Find you spot. Pitch up a tent you are ready to camp!

Whiskeytown Lake is a popular fishing destination in California, USA, known for its diverse fish species including rainbow trout, brown trout, kokanee salmon, and smallmouth bass.


The best area to fish for kokanee Salmon   at Whiskeytown Lake is between the Highway 299 bridge and Oak Bottom regional area . In the spring, many anglers have      luck trolling at 20 to 40 feet. The Whiskey Creek arm is also a very productive location to fish for Kokanee and offers the most wind protection.


Trolling for Kokanee on Whiskeytown Lake is the most popular technique. Troll using light gear with Downrigger or sliding sinker. Target Kokanee by using a pink wiggle hoochie, a dodger and some scented shoepeg corn.

Welcome this weeks episode of TLA.On this episode we go trout fishing at Quarry lakes located in Fremont California. This is a local lake that stocks various trouts, bass and catfish for local anglers to fish. 

For kayak and boat based anglers there is a 17 dollar total charge to fish the lake, and that includes mussel inspections, daily fishing permit, launching and parking fees. So take that into consideration when fishing this lake.

This is a notoriously difficult lake to fish, but maybe I'm just not that great of a lake fisherman. However, I was able to get a fun trip in with my friend Allen and Lonny on a stormy day

California Halibut Fishing Off the Marin Coast

Welcome to this weeks episode of TLA cooks. This week I'll show you how to make steamed sesame soy sauce California halibut. This is simple dish that can be quickly prepared and served.   

For this dish you will need:
2 table spoon oyster sauce
1 table spoon sesame oil
1 table spoon soy sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
Some ginger and green onions
1 1/2 lbs of fillet California halibut
