Phillies release 2021 All-Star Game jerseys, and they're a disgrace

The Liberty Line

The 2021 MLB All-Star Game is just three weeks away on July 13th, and earlier today, the MLB announced the first look at this year’s uniforms. It was often just National or American on the uniforms with players wearing a stylized version of their team’s cap in years past. However, this season, the MLB has switched things up, with players having a version of their team’s uniform instead of just NL or AL.

The change is likely due to Nike taking over as the uniform maker of the MLB. 2021 is their first season with All-Star uniforms, and the designs are definitely something. Here is a look at the Phillies’ rendition:

These jerseys look like something you get in the sporting goods section at Walmart. The design is horrid, much like their NBA All-Star uniforms. The PHI with the logo overtop is so bland and small, while most of the jersey is blank. For the rest of the uniform, the buttons are okay but make it look like a golf polo and not a baseball jersey. Follow that up with cuffs that are out of place, and this jersey gets a resounding 0/10 in my book.

Unfortunately, somehow the hat makes it even worse. Here is a look at the Phillies All-Star cap:

For one, the color on the hat doesn’t even match the jersey, and the stars make it look like it was made at Disney World. Now I get it that they’re purple because of the game taking place at Coors Field in Colorado, but that doesn’t excuse why they don’t match. If there were any purple in the jersey, it would make sense, but instead, they have baby blue on the sleeve’s cuffs.

All-Star voting is currently underway, and several Phillies are in contention for a spot on the NL Roster. Second basemen Jean Segura has made an interesting case, although being injured. Other candidates include BCIB J.T. Realmuto, Rhys Hoskins, and Bryce Harper. For pitching, Zack Wheeler seems to be a likely choice to earn a spot.

The first round of voting ends tonight at midnight, so be sure to get your votes in here. Meanwhile, fans can vote for their starters beginning June 28th, running through July 1st. The Phillies return to play tomorrow evening starting a three-game series on the road against the New York Mets.
