Former Nantucket police officer dead at 41

( Dec. 5, 2023 ) Former Nantucket police officer Gregory Furtado, who joined the Massachusetts State Police in 2006, has died at 41.

Nantucket police announced on social media Saturday that Furtado began his law enforcement career on the island, serving as a summer special officer before being hired full-time in June 2005. He then joined the State Police, graduating the State Police Academy in 2006.

Sergeant Furtado was assigned to the Cape and Islands District Attorney's Office detective unit and led its narcotics task force. He was the brother of current Nantucket police Sgt. Daniel Furtado.

Sgt. Gregory Furtado "spent his career in service to, and in protection of, the citizens of our commonwealth," the State Police announced via social media.

Furtado was a 2000 graduate of Plymouth North High School and St. Anselm College in 2004.  He excelled at hockey, playing for Plymouth North, St. Anselm and with the state police.

He leaves his wife Allison and children Sawyer and Everett.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Peter's Church in Plymouth at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 7.
