CHARLOTTE, NC - Located below the Binaco Tower in Charlotte, a mural painted by Alex Duncan is a colossal one. Duncan named his mural, which covers 5,360 square feet rooftops, "Charlotte's Massive Masterpiece". The painstaking work took Duncan 300 hours to complete.
Duncan was commissioned by Vijay Bhojwani, the owner of Binaco Real Estate, to paint a mural that is visible from the Binaco Tower. Without a second thought, Duncan accepted this long-awaited opportunity.
“You start by measuring the surface area by hand, creating a grid of 2 feet by 2 feet boxes,” Duncan said. Duncan created 12 different designs before he and Vijay chose one he eventually painted.
Duncan said that painting the mural in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic provided an additional meaning to the process and the mural itself. He inserted a message to the mural that reads "We Are Together".
The mural features a queen with two birds carrying the thread that keeps the city together. Duncan explained that the design resembles the role Charlotte plays as a city in holding its people together amidst the challanges that divide them.
“The message WE ARE TOGETHER is written at the bottom. The queen is not only part of the artwork, but is the artwork. She is the Queen City." said Duncan
As he often does, Duncan adopted a style that incorporates cubism, constructivism, realism, and pop art collage in making the mural. He aimed to create a lively and evocative piece full of meanings and intricacies, and one that relates to everyone instead of just the typical connoisseur.
