HICKORY, NC—Lenoir-Rhyne University announced the Helen and Leonard Moretz Stadium will undergo a $15 million renovation. The project, Centennial Campaign for Moretz Stadium, will be the stadium's first major renovation since 1964.
Construction will start in the fall 2021 and projected to be completed almost entirely before the 2022 football season.
"This bold plan aligns with our strategic plan for athletics that calls for enhancing our facilities over the next decade." said the vice president for athletics, Kim Pate.
The renovation will add and improve grandstands, new entry doors on the west and east sides, new video boards and a press box, and new concessions and restrooms. It will also increase the stadium's capacity to 8,200, which could be further increased in the future. The new luxury suites and club VIP seating area will render the stadium to be one of the handful Division II schools with suites and club seating area.
Some $8 million private donors have been gathered to fund the renovation. The project received a notable gift from the owner of sport socks company PowerSox, Marilyn, and John Moretz. The University's athletic campus will be named the Moretz Sports Athletic Campus to honor the couple.
Moretz Stadium is one of the oldest stadiums in Division II operating since 1924. The stadium was named after Helen and Leonard Moretz in 1989.
LR University president, Dr. Fred Whitt said that the renovation will provide nationally competitive facilities for the university's athletic program and strengthen its place as a university known for its academic and athletic success.
