Nebraska football is continuing to add to its staff, as Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule is working to hire UIL executive director Susan Elza as Nebraska’s Chief of Staff. This was first reported by Football Scoop.com’s Zach Barnett

Elza is the chief executive of athletics for the state of Texas. She was a former high school softball coach, and worked in athletics administration in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Elza and Rhule have known each other since the latter’s days at Baylor. She will represent the program in off-field issues, and will be someone who will be able to serve as a liaison for Texas high school coaches.

This could be extremely important for Nebraska. While she is not an on-field hire who will make an impact on the field, she will serve as a buffer for Texas high school players. The coaching staff has made it clear that they want to bring as many Texas players to the program as they possibly can.

This is certainly an admirable goal. However, retainment and getting players to Lincoln have been two big issues over the past couple of years with previous staffs. Establishing an on-campus connection with prospective recruits and Texas high school coaches is important, and it sounds like Elza will be able to help facilitate that.

It will be interesting to see if the Nebraska football administrative staff undergoes anymore changes. This one may prove to be beneficial, as it will help the program build relationships with Texas high school players. Every single move the program has made has a purpose so far, and it’s fascinating to watch it unfold.
