Nebraska football officially announced the hiring of Bob Wager to the coaching staff. Wager will serve the role of tight ends and special teams coach per Matt Stepp of TexasFootball.com

Wager has experience coaching football on multiple levels. He has a 206-100 high school coaching record and has made 17 consecutive playoff appearances. He has coached at Tolar, Kaufman and Arlington Martin high schools.

Wager also has experience with some of the premier recruiting showcases in the country. He has been a part of the last seven Under Armour All-American Games, with a role on the game’s Board of Directors.

The Nebraska football coaching staff has a little bit more clarity with this announcement on Friday. The Huskers now have eight additions to the staff. Marcus Satterfield (OC/QBs), Tony White (DC), Ed Foley (special teams coordinator), EJ Barthel (RBs) Donovan Raiola (OL), Terrance Knighton (DL) and Evan Cooper (DBs) have all been named to the staff.

Wager’s hire could help Nebraska football in recruiting the state of Texas. The Nebraska football coaching staff has made Texas a priority area, with several offers going out to recruits in the area. They have already landed several players from the state. Edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen is one of them. Texas A&M transfer Elijah Jeudy is another. Former Baylor speedster Josh Fleeks is also a player on the roster that transferred to Nebraska.

In addition to transfers on the roster, Matt Rhule has managed to keep several players from the state in the 2023 recruiting class. Defensive lineman Riley Van Poppel and linebacker Dylan Rogers are just two of the names that the Nebraska coaching staff has managed to keep in the class.

It will be intriguing to see what wagers impact on this staff will be. At the very least, this gives the Huskers another coach with a set of eyes in the state of Texas. This is a positive for recruiting, and could help set the foundation of the program in the coming years.
