Plainfield residents who are registered to vote in Will County can cast their ballots early for the Consolidated Election and the Cannabis Advisory Referendum, according to the Village Voice.
The Plainfield Village Hall is located at 24401 Lockport St. The early voting period will run from March 20 to March 31, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays.
The Consolidated Election, which will take place on April 4, 2023, will elect candidates for various local offices, such as village trustees, school board members, park district commissioners, and library board trustees.
The candidates who have filed petitions to run for the three trustee positions open in the Village of Plainfield are: John Anderson, Mary Kay Ludemann, Brian Wojowski, and Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant.
The Cannabis Advisory Referendum, which will also appear on the April 4 ballot, will ask Plainfield voters whether they want the village to allow cannabis businesses to operate within the village limits.
The referendum question will read: "Shall the Village of Plainfield allow cannabis businesses to operate within the Village of Plainfield?"
The referendum is non-binding, meaning that the village board is not obligated to follow the outcome of the vote.
However, the village board decided to put the question on the ballot to gauge the public opinion on the issue, as cannabis sales are legal in Illinois since January 1, 2020, but the village has not opted in to allow cannabis businesses in the village.
Plainfield residents who want to vote early at the village hall must bring a valid photo ID, such as a driver’s license or a state ID card. They will also have to fill out an application form and sign an affidavit before receiving their ballot.
Early voters can use the touch-screen voting machines or the paper ballots provided at the village hall.
Plainfield residents who are not registered to vote or who need to update their registration can also do so at the village hall during the early voting period, as long as they bring two forms of identification, one of which must show their current address.
They will also have to vote at the same time as they register or update their registration.
Plainfield residents who prefer to vote by mail can request a vote by mail ballot from the Will County Clerk’s Office, either online or by calling the Will County Clerk's Office.
The deadline to request a vote by mail ballot is March 30, 2023. The vote by mail ballots must be postmarked by April 4, 2023, or returned in person to the Will County Clerk’s Office by 7 p.m. on Election Day.
Plainfield residents who want to vote on Election Day can find their polling place and view their sample ballot online at the Will County Clerk's election voter services registration lookup.
The polling places will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on April 4, 2023.
