The Walmart in Plainfield IL has failed, that is, failed to meet financial expectations, and will be closing its doors for good.

This report is not necessarily a good news and is a shock to this formerly named Walkers' Grove community.

Yes, the Walmart Supercenter at 12690 South Route 59 in Plainfield is closing its curtain to the public on March 10, 2023, after more than a decade of serving the community.

The store, which opened in 2003 and became a supercenter in 2011, employs about 300 associates who will be offered transfers to nearby Walmart locations or severance packages if eligible.

A Walmart spokesperson said the decision to close the store was based on several factors, including financial performance and long-term plans.

According to Felicia McCranie, current director at Walmart corporate affairs, this location has "not performed as well as we'd hoped."

The spokesperson added that customers can still shop at the other 7 Walmart supercenters within 10 miles of the Plainfield location. The nearest supercenter is at 2300 US Highway 34 in Oswego, IL.

The store’s pharmacy will remain open until March 9, 2023, and customers can transfer their prescriptions to another Walmart pharmacy or a pharmacy of their choice.

The store’s photo center, wireless services and other departments will also close on March 10, along with the main store.

Walmart said it will discontinue to service customers online and through its app for this location, which offers free delivery, pickup and curbside services.

“We appreciate the support of our customers and community in Plainfield over the years,” the spokesperson said. “We look forward to continuing to serve them at our other locations and online.”
