Man, 26, shot in Berkeley

Berkeley police are investigating a shooting Tuesday that sent a man to Highland Hospital just after 3:30 p.m., according to preliminary reports.

Police found evidence of gunfire on Sacramento Street near Oregon and Russell streets and then responded to Highland to investigate reports about a gunshot victim who turned up there.

As of 4:10 p.m., the male victim was being treated for one or two gunshot wounds to the lower extremities, an officer reported over the radio.

A reader told The Scanner that southbound Sacramento Street was closed as of shortly before 4 p.m.: "yellow tape, many cop cars, neighbors gawking."

There have now been 24 confirmed shootings in Berkeley this year, wounding seven people. None to date have been fatal.

On Monday, police arrested a Berkeley man on suspicion of attempted murder after he shot an apartment inspector in the leg and then claimed he believed there had been a break-in attempt, according to BPD.

The Scanner has asked Berkeley police for details about Tuesday's shooting and will update this story when additional information becomes available.
