Career and Success Academy, a charter school network in South Bend, is expanding its reach with the opening of a new high school near the downtown medical mile. Called The Portage School for Leaders, the institution aims to foster leadership skills in its students from day one, both inside and outside the classroom. The school promises an experiential learning environment, which is a hallmark of the Career and Success Academy schools, and has led to both the high school and middle school earning an “A” rating from the Indiana Department of Education.
Unlike traditional schools, the Portage School for Leaders plans to allow its students to chart their own educational journeys. The school's Head of School, Dr. Andrew Hoyt, explained that educators are committed to listening to students' interests and passions, and creating a learning environment that reflects their individual goals. Teachers will also be given more autonomy to make decisions that benefit their students, and the school intends to hire the best local teachers for this innovative new program.
The Portage School for Leaders does not measure success solely by test scores or quiz results, but also considers students' employability and life skills that will serve them in their future careers, trades, or further education. This nontraditional approach to education is highly attractive to families seeking an alternative to the traditional education model.
The Portage School for Leaders is accepting applications on a first-come, first-served basis and will be admitting only 150 students for the upcoming academic year. This new school is an exciting addition to the educational options available to families in South Bend, and promises a unique and innovative learning experience for students who want to become leaders in their future careers.
