Start with 5-7 hearts. Have the left side of the hearts (the capital letters) in front of your child and give your child the lowercase letters one at a time to find its match.

I usually start with matches where the lowercase letter looks similar to the capital letter and mix in one or two matches with letters that don't look alike. For example, I might offer these five hearts to match: C, S, T, X, E. Knowing that E might be trickier I'd save it for last. Once your child has been exposed to all of the lowercase letters, it may not matter as much which combination of letters you offer for matching.

Put magnets on the back of the hearts to use this matching activity on a vertical surface such as your refrigerator or an easel.

Turn it into a travel activity by putting magnets on the back and using a magnetic cookie sheet in the car.
