Rock Hall EDU celebrates Pride Month with collections, resources

Terrence Jacobs

AKRON, OH — In celebration of Pride Month, Rock Hall EDU has launched a new vast and diverse Pride Collection featuring revolutionaries, icons, and allies.

The LGBTQIA+ Community has long been part of rock and roll. Their perspectives and experiences have shaped rock and roll and its history. In recent decades, as music is a popular tool in promoting their view and beliefs, artists have been using music to support the community and express their views and rights.

The Rock Hall EDU wanted parents and teachers to help students and their kids examine LGBTQIA+ contributions to music with their new collection.

The collection included a “Coming Out” playlist that shows a range of musical styles used to express their feelings and experiences when they first came out. The collection also featured a different musical style to show kids that members of the community came from diverse backgrounds.

Additionally, they added the Diana Ross “I’m Coming Out” music explored from the point of view of the community and Diana Ross in the 1970s, and how the song wanted to highlight the acceptance, internally and externally, for LGBTQIA+ individuals. They also put the “Gender Is Over Slogan” by Laura Jane Grace and “War is Over” by John Lennon.

The Pride Collection aims to help students and adolescents of any orientation and identity to reflect on their own and other experiences.

Teachers and parents can create a free account at Rock Hall EDU (rockhall.com/education) to explore and download resources curated by the award-winning education team.

There will be professionally developed lesson plans, activities, and downloadable activity sheets, presentations, videos, playlists, writing prompts, and more to attract students to learn more about the power of rock & roll.

All materials provided by Rock Hall EDU have met the national and state learning standards.
