Yes, that's right! We're officially on the map - not just for our beautiful shorelines, bustling cities, and scrumptious Taylor ham sandwiches - but also for the distinct way we talk.
The study, which analyzed how positively Twitter users talk about 165 accents throughout the United States, Britain, and 104 other countries around the world, put New Jersey's distinctive lilt at a positivity rating of 23.6%. That's right up there with accents from Texas, Maine, and Long Island. The research used a Hugging Face AI algorithm to analyze the positivity of over half a million tweets, with our regional accent garnering some real affection.
Now, the top spot for the U.S. was taken by New Orleans, at a positivity rating of 46.4%. But hey, we're not ones to back down from a challenge. Let's show 'em the spirit of the Jersey Shore, and aim for that number one spot next time!
But it wasn't just American accents taking center stage. The research also found that accents are emotional. Scientifically, it's been found that betrayal hurts more when it's by someone whose accent you trust versus someone whose accent you don’t. This highlights the importance of accents and how they resonate with our feelings and perceptions.
And while we're talking about accents, let's not forget the celebs who charm us with their distinctive tones. Idris Elba took the title of the world’s favorite celebrity accent with a whopping positivity rating of 77.7%. Looks like his charming British accent is winning hearts around the globe.
