It’s not a usual day where you end up saving someone because of something you watched on TV. During moments of crisis, we don’t hesitate to help those in need, especially when it comes to our family and friends. In Hazleton, Pennsylvania, 8-year-old Jaxson Dempsey spotted his sister, 20-month-old Lelia Dempsey choking after eating a chicken nugget.
They were both in the backseat of their dad's car. Instead of panicking and screaming, little Jaxson calmly told his dad to pull over. Once the car pulled over, Jaxson was able to help his sister dislodge the nugget that was blocking Lelia’s airway. Jaxson basically saved his sister’s life.
How Jaxson Learned This Skill
When people asked Jaxson how he learned to save his sister’s life, Jaxson admitted watching WWE superstar John Cena doing the same procedure on an episode of the Nickelodeon show The Substitute.
The Substitute is a show that features pranks, where celebrities go undercover and surprise students as substitute teachers. Each school that gets visited is met with a $25,000 donation. This show is hosted by Juanpa Zurita, a social media influencer, vlogger, model, and actor.
A Father’s Appreciation
As for Jaxson’s father, he was amazed and grateful for the quick-thinking actions of his son, especially since Lelia was so young and could have easily been in a much worse situation:
"If I was by myself and Jaxson wasn't with me, and I stopped and gave her a chicken nugget, I couldn't hear her because she was choking. She wasn't coughing; she wasn't panicking. She just had no air going through; she wasn't breathing," Dempsey said. " Thank God Jaxson was there because, without him, I don't know if Lelia would be here."
You see, since the father was in the front seat, he couldn’t easily see or hear any suspicious sounds from Lelia in the backseat. Since she wasn’t actively panicking or coughing, he didn’t hear anything suspicious. However, Jaxson was sitting beside her and could easily see the distress. The lack of noise meant that Lelia had almost stopped breathing.
As for Jaxson himself, he just felt that he was doing the right thing — I mean this is his sister we are talking about. Plus, he did get a bit of fame among his peers ever since that fateful day, which isn’t too shabby.
John Cena’s Reaction
The other day, John Cena had heard about the situation involving Jaxson and Lelia. John Cena was surprised to learn that Jaxson had learned it from a segment of a show that he appeared on.
John Cena ended up sending a video personal message to Jaxson and his family, and said the following:
"Hey Jaxson, this is 16-time WWE champ and Peacemaker John Cena saying hello. Now I heard a story about you, and it really touched my heart. A story that in a time of crisis, you were brave enough to take action. Doing so, you saved your little sister's life. I wanted to commend you because the actions of a true hero are those who do act in a time of crisis.
Usually, when bad things happen, one of the toughest things for all of us to do is to take action. You jumped right in helped out the best you could....you saved your sister's life. I really want to say thank you for being you, Jaxson. Thank you for being an inspiration; thank you from all of us,"
It’s really amazing when your idols end up congratulating you for the heroics you perform on those that you love, just as John Cena did for Jaxson Dempsey. Plus, we have to remember that Jaxson is a little kid himself so it might be even more awesome to meet your idols.
For someone like Jaxson, perhaps there will be further praises and stories, especially in the days ahead. For example, over his hometown of Hazleton, Pennsylvania, they even did a little parade celebrating the heroics of Jaxson.
In this parade were many firetrucks. They had many lights blazing and many sirens blaring. It’s cool that the firefighters decided to honor this special young boy for doing the right thing. They took time out of their day to really respect the Dempsey family.

This just goes to show that the power of siblings is really strong. When the times are tough, they may offer a lending hand. Sometimes, they may even save your life, especially during emergencies. People like Jaxson, a young boy from Hazleton, Pennsylvania, are proof that there are many wonderful children out there — it just takes a special moment for them to showcase their talents.
