18-year-old Ashis Dhakal was originally born in a South Asian country called Nepal. Nepal is located near countries like India, Tibet, and Bangladesh. Some time ago, Ashis had been living in a refugee camp in Nepal. Years later, Ashis grew up right in Salt Lake City, Utah. He even attended Granite Park Junior High School, South Salt Lake.
In Salt Lake City, Utah, Ashis realized that he wanted to give back to the community. For many years, people made fun of Ashis. Ashis’ religion is Hinduism, which is one of the world’s oldest religions. Hinduism is a popular religion in countries like India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Singapore, Malaysia, and many more. Despite being bullied a lot, Ashis was inspired to create a charity called Ashis Collects Clothes. This charity organizes clothing drives and donations for people in need, regardless of faith or race.
A few years ago, Ashis was working at a local KFC in Salt Lake City, Utah. He stumbled upon a gentleman who was homeless. Ashis was cleaning tables at the time, and he got to know the homeless man. The homeless man shared his story about how he became homeless, and Ashis became a good friend of his. Ashis also realized that the man was in dire need of some new clothes, and it was another sign for Ashis to start his charitable efforts.
Ashis Collects Clothes had its first-ever clothing drive back in 2019. Ashis managed all parts of the operations, including the collection of many shoes, hats, socks, coats, jackets, and shoes.
When Ashis started, he was able to bring and unite many people together, regardless of their faith. Ashis was able to help those who struggled to help themselves. Ashis personally grew up in an environment where money was once scarce and wanted to keep the kindness forward. Plus, Ashis is in a better place in his life now, where he has reliable access to the internet from his computer, has a phone as most kids do, lives in a house, and has a family that loves him.
Ashis Collects Clothes is just the beginning of what Ashis has in store for his future. Ashis has hopes and dreams of becoming big one way and can help more people in need, especially as someone who business-savvy. Hoda Kotb, an American broadcast journalist, television personality, and author introduced Ashis to Mark Cuban, a billionaire entrepreneur, television personality, media proprietor, and investor. Mark Cuban is one of the “sharks” (or judges) for the TV show Shark Tank.
One of Ashis biggest role models is Mark Cuban. Ashis likes Mark Cuban because Mark does a lot of philanthropy, especially in his capacity as an internationally famous entrepreneur. As for Mark Cuban, he gave Ashis the goal to collect 575 coats for those in need of it. Ashis first struggled with this goal but then Mark Cuban gave him the name of Amy Dott Harmer.
Amy Dott Harmer, works at Serve Refugees, which is run by Utah Refugee Connection. Serves Refugees provides a platform for Utah organizations, programs, and providers to connect services, goods, and volunteers across Utah. Within days, Ashis received piles upon piles of coats. Ashis was amazed at the momentum and ended up getting over 1000 coats in just 4 days. In the end, he obtained 3000 coats, with the help of many new and powerful friends, especially those in Utah.
In the end, the parent company of NBC, Comcast, decided that they would match the number of coats that Ashis received. As for Ashis, he’s probably super humbled and grateful to unite many people together, all in the name of kindness and some clean clothes.
