Are you ready to learn how to set your business blog up for success? If so, I have some tips that can help you find your way and achieve your goals.

Before I show you some of the ways I've optimized our blogs throughout the years, I want to share why this content marketing strategy is so important for companies and solopreneurs across all industries.

When businesses have an active blog, they tend to see a dramatic boost in engagement, organic traffic, sales, and, interestingly, customer trust. Let's look beyond these impressive perks and check out a few key statistics that highlight the value of blogging.

Businesses that blog see…

  • 67% more leads than non-blogging businesses
  • 55% more organic traffic
  • And 57% say they've acquired new customers directly from their blog

But setting up a basic blog and writing a post or two isn't enough. You have to take steps to ensure your audience has the best possible experience every time they read an article on your site.

Today, I'm going to show you a few simple things anyone can do to take their blog to the next level.

Let's get started!

Establish Clear Goals and Performance Metrics

The first thing you need to do to build a successful blog is establish clear goals and performance metrics.

Goals will help you see the big picture. You can figure out what's going well and where you can improve. Some businesses may want to grow their email list, while others want to boost sales. Your goals will vary based on your industry and size.

Setting up performance metrics is vital for reaching your goals, which is why these two go hand-in-hand. You first figure out what you want to achieve, then break down how you'll get there into manageable chunks.

For example, if a marketer wants to grow their social media following by 600 over half a year, they would benefit from setting monthly goals of 100 and weekly goals of 25. Shrinking down numbers in this way will help you stay on track and gradually make progress toward your idea of success.

Social media followers are just one example of a metric you can track. Some folks track email signups, traffic, and sales; again, it all varies based on what your company does.

I believe this step is so important because it helps you keep your focus on specific topics and goals when creating content for your blog.

Provide Value to Your Target Audience

Now that you know what you want to achieve, it’s time to turn your focus toward the heart of content creation – providing value to your target audience. If readers don’t resonate with your writing, they have no reason to stick around.

If you’re wondering why this matters, consider the fact that at least 50% of shoppers say they read between 3 and 5 blog posts on a website before placing an order. Failure to keep readers invested and engaged will result in them leaving without taking action on your site.

My best advice for you is to use things like surveys, social media insights, Google Analytics, and conversations to learn everything you can about your readers. The more you know about their goals, interests, and pain points, the better!

We’ve found that educational content is your best bet for improving traffic and clicks. In general, blogs that publish content with an educational tone and theme get 52% more traffic than content that’s solely focused on selling a product.

Use what you know about your audience to create content that helps them reach their goals and improves their lives, and you can expect the same benefits.

Streamline Navigation

Navigation is important for creating a positive user experience and guiding your audience to relevant content and offers.

There are many different ways you can make your blog more accessible by improving the way people use it. One of the first things you should do is include a list of categories. You want to make it as easy as possible for people to narrow the focus and find content that resonates with their needs.

Actually, I’d recommend taking this a step further and adding a search bar. If readers can type in a few keywords and find what they’re looking for, there’s a much better chance they’ll stick around and continue engaging with your brand.

You’ll also want to make sure you use a mobile-responsive theme and template so people can enjoy your site regardless of whether they are using a tablet, desktop, or smartphone. A poor user interface will result in an abnormally high bounce rate, which isn’t good for your blog or business as a whole.

It’s also a good idea to simplify menus to ensure people can move around your blog with just a few clicks.

Diversify Your Content

One of the best ways to set your blog up for success is to diversify your content. People are fine with reading text-only posts every once in a while, but if you don’t spice up your blog with things like engaging videos, polls, and other forms of interactive content, you could see traffic slow down.

If you need evidence, consider this: 90% of internet users say they are always on the lookout for brands that offer robust interactive content. There are plenty of ways to add to what you’re already doing and make it more engaging.

A strategy that has worked extremely well for us is turning blog posts into videos. Then, we embed the video on each respective post so visitors can choose to read, watch, or listen.

We found that, on average, adding videos makes it 53 times more likely that a specific page will make it to one of the elusive top spots on Google. Plus, videos give you an opportunity to expand on ideas and give users a hands-on demonstration of your tips, strategies, and tutorials.

I also advise adding subtle but visible social icons so users can easily share your content on sites like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Since 60% of shoppers say they’ve turned to social media before buying something online, it’s easy to see how this simple addition can have a tremendous impact on your success.

Track Your Progress

Finally, don’t forget to keep an eye on your analytics. I suggest setting up Google Analytics so you can see how people are engaging with your content. We like to keep an eye on posts to see which ones attract the most people.

Understanding which articles resonate with readers helps us shape our content and overall marketing strategy. We’ve added new subtopics to our blog and removed others based solely on what we learned through our analytics reports.

My suggestion is to check on your traffic, sources, links, engagement, and bounce rate at least once a week. Look for patterns that occur over time and use that knowledge to optimize your blog and make it more appealing for future visitors.

Final Thoughts

There you have it! Thinking about how to set your blog up for success doesn’t have to be intimidating. If you’re willing to think carefully and gather information from your customers directly, through surveys, and indirectly, through analytics, you'll have what you need to start making improvements.

It’s worth mentioning that this can be a slow process. Don’t get intimidated if you don’t see massive changes overnight. But if you’re patient, thoughtful, and pay attention to the data, you’ll be well on your way to finding success with your business blog.
