(Castle Rock, CO) Douglas County schools hired Alison Rausch as parent, community, and civic engagement director. Rausch served on the board of directors for American Academy while Kane led the multi-campus charter school. The two also served together on the Colorado League of Charter Schools.

Rausch sees her role as a liaison to those advocating to meet their needs in the district, whether for a child, family, business, or group. The district went three years without someone in her position, and she believes many people have felt disconnected from their teachers, schools, and administrators since the pandemic.

Rausch's immediate focus is on educating the community about the district's financial needs should the board approve asking for an MLO and Bond on the November ballot.

Rausch says she's looking forward to connecting with the community and helping clear up any misconceptions or issues of distrust the public may have with the district.

Does Kane have a pro-charter school agenda?

While some community members have questioned Kane's hiring and recruiting of former charter school leaders as a signal that she's pro-charter school and not interested in promoting neighborhood schools, Kane said in an interview that's "absolutely not the case."

"I'm an advocate for parent choice, and I'm pro what's best for our kids," she said. "Seventy-five percent of the district's students attend a neighborhood school, and 25% attend a charter. My goal is to help improve the education of all our students."

"Charter schools are not neighborhood schools, and they don't replace the need for them," said Kane during a presentation to The Canyons residents. Building three neighborhood schools is first on the list of priorities should voters approve a bond in 2022.

Kane and Rausch's children attended Rock Canyon High School, a neighborhood school in Castle Pines.
