Universal free lunch set to expire

For the last two years, children in Colorado schools have enjoyed free breakfast and lunch through a federally funded program.

Yet, the pandemic-related program expires at the end of the school year. According to Colorado Public Radio (CPR) report, state legislators are working to provide funding to offer universal free lunches starting again in 2024.

CPR reported that “under SB22-087, the state government would pay for local districts to provide free meals for hundreds of thousands of students above the federal cutoff for free lunches. The federal government would continue funding meals for lower-income students.”

Paid meals will resume on August 8th. According to the district, elementary school lunches are $3.25, middle school lunches are $3.75, and high school lunches are $4.00.

You can go to the Nutrition Services website for information on who qualifies and how to apply for free and reduced lunch.
