Mark Rothko is an American artist, once said that “I am interested only in expressing basic human emotions like a tragedy, ecstasy, doom and so on”. He declared, “and the fact that a lot of people break down and cry when confronting with my pictures, this shows that I can communicate with the basic emotions of the human’’. This was one person’s vision of the art. But what do we mean by art today? And why we find it so difficult while defining art?

This content is an exploration of the art culture in the US. And this is an attempt to articulate the meaning of art. It tells the relationship between art and an artist.

What is Art?

This question often pops up in our minds and with many answers. But we weren’t able to recognize the proper meaning of art. By hearing the word art, something creative waves in our minds.

Art is how an artist expresses the beauty of nature, visually to humans via his creative skills like imagination, painting, sculpturing, or producing works to be appreciated. Art is the application and expression of how an artist views the world.

An insight into the history of art in the US

Thomas Cole, an American Painter narrates the wideness of art in the US, “The most distinctive, and perhaps, the most impressive, characteristic of the American scenery is its wilderness”.

The united states’ rich artistic history extends from the earliest indigenous cultures to the most recent globalization. Centuries before the European colonizer, native American people had crafted the ritual and utilitarian objects that reflected their creative skills towards the natural environment and beliefs. After the arrival of the Europeans, the native artists looked to the tendencies of the European in portraiture and landscape painting to craft the representations of the new landscapes. But it was not until the mid of the 19th century, however, American artists were considered to have launched a cohesive movement. By the early 20th century, artists still took nods from Europeans. But increasingly focused on the inhabitants of American urban centers and the more rural Midwest. After world war II, a movement of American artists, comprised of abstraction expressionists took international fame. And for the first time, American artistic influence took abroad. and later Minimalism and Pop Art greatly impacted the art world. Subsequently, with numerous global art centers and international connections, it is now difficult to point to a specific American art trend, although one can still graph the ascendency of American artists in the global art sphere.
