The past two years have proven to be challenging for quite a lot of us, with issues that affect us all regardless of our background. From illnesses to job losses, price increases, and even much deeper issues for some, life has had a peculiar way of testing our strength and capacity to cope with it all. But what can we do to be proactive and stay sane through these difficult times? We’ve spoken with our friend Prunella Harris, CEO & Founder of Restorative Family Services, LLC, who has kindly shared some tips that can have a positive impact on our daily lives.

“When considering maintaining mental wellness, we should put our focus on how to fuel our body, mind, and spirit so that it functions optimally in a world that is unpredictable and chaotic.” says the Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 19 years as a mental health entrepreneur. Following her expert’s advice, below are some tried and true strategies for maintaining emotional balance.

1. Consuming fruits and veggies each day keeps a bad mood at bay. Eating the right things such as bananas, berries, whole grains, and low glycemic foods ensures that we get the necessary nutrients and vitamins and balances our mood.

2. Exercise- keep your heart pumping, and you will release endorphins such as dopamine and serotonin, key neurotransmitters needed to regulate your mood. You also benefit from having more energy when you work out regularly.

3. Practice healthy sleep hygiene. Turn off the phone, computer, and television so that you can get quality sleep. Most people feel better after 6-8 hours of sleep.

4. Reach out to your support network. Talking with friends about something that is upsetting and having your feelings validated releases the hormone Oxytocin, which is the stress combating hormone.

5. Have an attitude of gratitude. When you make it a habit to appreciate what is going on in your life right now, it has major benefits on your life because you are more optimistic and hopeful, and as a side effect, you ward off anxiety and depression because you are centering yourself in the present moment.

If you find these helpful, you can also tune in to the Rise Station Podcast on Apple, Spotify, and all major platforms for weekly mental wellness tips. You can also find more about Prunella and her practice at www.restorativefamilyservices.com.

From our part, we say… make time for yourself, make yourself a priority. Incorporate these strategies into your daily routine, and remember to have a Beautiful Day/ Un Dia Bonito!
