Colorado Governor Jared Polis extends mask mandate, relaxes rules for vaccinated

(DENVER, Colo.) Gov. Jared Polis increased a mask mandate throughout the state for an additional 30 days Sunday, loosening requirements on face masks for clusters of people who have received a COVID-19 vaccine.

According to Sentinel Colorado, the new executive order states that groups of 10 or more people assembling do not have to wear masks as long as 80% of the group is vaccinated against COVID-19. The order additionally expresses that people are required to show proof of vaccination but does not explain what type of proof is acceptable.

Masks are required to be worn in all public indoor spaces in counties with steeper rates of COVID-19 when 10 or more individuals who have not been vaccinated are present. Additionally, masks are required to be worn when individuals whose status of vaccinations are unknown are present.

The Denver Channel reports that the mask mandate that was amended and extended by Gov. Polis was set to expire this past weekend. Colorado residents were encouraged by the Governor to receive a vaccination as he wrote in a press release that this would allow the state to return back to life as the people knew it.

“Vaccines not only protect you and your loved ones from getting this deadly virus but also allows Colorado to return back to normal,” wrote Gov. Polis in a press release.

Colorado residents that enter schools, child care centers, indoor children's camps, state government buildings, prisons and jails and health care facilities are nevertheless required to wear masks. A total of 1,913,153 Coloradans have been fully vaccinated thus far, with 2,620,098 state residents receiving at least one dose of the vaccine, according to the state's vaccine data dashboard.
