When most people think of Mexican food, they think of tacos, but if they think about it, Mexican food is Latino culture. More business problems get solved over Nachos and Cerveza, than in the office.

They pass their heritage down to their children and grandchildren. From the beginning of their family tree, recipes have been carried through their lineage. Most would like to keep their family recipes in the family, while others open local businesses to share their customs and family recipes worldwide. So that people can experience good quality Mexican food.

Miguel’s Mexican Restaurant

Miguel’s Mexican Restaurant is a high-quality Mexican restaurant in Bangor, ME. Their menu items range from Mexican and Southwestern to health foods. Miguel's Mexican restaurant is vegetarian-friendly and has Gluten Free options as well as some Vegan options. (Yes, there is a difference between vegetarian-friendly and Vegan!)

You must try the loaded nachos here.

I went there to try their dinner menu and saw that they not only served dinner, but they served lunch and breakfast. I ended up having dinner with no regrets, except that I couldn’t try everything on the menu!

I ended up getting the Carne Asada Platter. This dish was delectable and mouthwatering; the setup of the platter was captivating. The Carne Asada Platter comes with a tender steak, marinated in olive oil, sweet onion, and Cerveza (beer) accompanied by flame-roasted vegetables, guacamole, cilantro, lime, and flour tortillas.

Plus, you get a choice of two sides. I chose Spanish rice and Jicama with Mango Slaw. Yeah, I had to get a doggy bag. I guess I am not the first gringo to need one, even though the wait staff chuckled slightly.

Miguel's is an extraordinary eatery to sit down and have a few cocktails or a glass of wine or a nice cold beverage in Bangor, ME.

You can find this restaurant in Bangor, ME, at 697 Hogan Rd. They’re open from 11 am to 9 pm Monday through Saturday, and they close at 8 pm on Sunday. Call 207-942-3002 if you want to make a reservation, though there’s usually no wait except around six pm on Friday.

Las Palapas

Another jewel you will find for Mexican food in Brewer and Bangor, ME, is Las Palapas at 8 Bangor Mall Blvd or 557 Wilson Street in Brewer.

It is such an excellent Mexican restaurant that it is indeed a gem to find. When my sister suggested it for dinner as we were coming back from Bucksport, I was like, Las Poppa what? I had never heard of it, but she was enamored with the choice menu there.

Las Palapas is Mexican, Southwestern, Tex-Mex, and Vegetarian-friendly too. You can ask for gluten-free items though they don’t advertise those. They serve tacos, burritos, enchiladas, fajitas, quesadillas, and many others. Check out their menu before you go. Bangor & Brewer use the same menu.

Seafood ChimichangaBy the author.

I had the Seafood Chimichanga. This dish came with a flour tortilla stuffed with shrimp and crab, deep-fried golden brown, topped off with cheese dip, and served with lettuce, Pico de Gallo, sour cream, and a side of rice and beans.

Their food was so flavorful and scrumptious. I would give it a 5-star rating. The smell itself was so delightful and ravishing it made my mouth water.

Las Palapas is open from 11 am to 10 pm Sunday through Thursday, and Friday and Saturday, from 11 am to 10:30 pm.

You can call 207-573-9716 for the Brewer restaurant or 207-947-3500 for the Bangor Las Palapas.

Chipotle Mexican Restaurant

A familiar Mexican food spot is Chipotle in Bangor, ME. When you’re looking for typical traditional Mexican fare, Chipotle is it. They’re located at 583 Stillwater Avenue.

Chipotle is a fast-food place where you build your own dish. It’s a quick and fun place for you to go. When I went, I had a spicy chicken bowl with guacamole (I love guac!), corn, black pinto beans, some cilantro, a little bit of queso, and rice.

This rice bowl was an excellent lunch for a busy but beautiful day. Although a rice bowl is not always guaranteed to fill me up, it was enough that day. It is nice to have options and choose how your food is prepared.

Final thoughts

In conclusion, it’s always fun to try something new. I love Las Palapas now that my sister turned me on to it. Mexican food has such heralded heritage and it’s always nice for others to share not only their culture but sharing their family recipes. I will surely go back again and again until I’ve tried everything on the menu.
