Vintage Vegas, Part 1: The Flamingo Hotel & Casino

We spent the day exploring the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. We came for the Van Gogh Alive immersive experience, but first we got to tour the property – including the gardens and greenhouse – and take an audio tour of "America’s Largest Home." If you’re looking for things to do and see in Asheville, The Biltmore is an experience you won’t soon forget. And if you can go while the Van Gogh exhibit is still on site, it's a wonderful way to spend a full day!

Atlanta, GA

We spent the day exploring the eastern part of Atlanta, GA, where we learn about (and get to try our hands at!) graffiti and street art, see Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's birth home and church, eat soul food, get the perfect view of Atlanta’s skyline, and explore Little Five Points, Inman Park, Krog Street Market, and part of the Atlanta Beltline.

On our second day in Seattle, we paid tribute to Bruce and Brandon Lee and Kurt Cobain before venturing to Fremont. We saw more of the international sides of Seattle before capping off our trip with incredible views of the city skyline and equally incredible oysters.

On Day 1 we visited Pike Place Market and the Gum Wall, enjoyed some Beecher's Mac n' cheese, went to Starbucks Reserve Roaster in Capitol Hill, compared a couple of rocking statues, and got Japanese dinner and snacks at Uwajimaya Village.

We never thought that a dairy farm would be so cool! This was an unplanned stop on our road trip, taking the place of the other things we thought we’d be doing in Indiana, and it was such a fun, beautiful, educational day! We learned that Fair Oaks Farms is the largest agricultural tourist site in the U.S., and they are leading the way in technological and eco-friendly advances in farming. We got to try some of the cheese and ice cream made right on site. And a highlight for us was watching mama cows give birth to calves. 

It was really incredible and deeply moving to witness animals giving birth like that. But what we loved the most about this stop is the conversation it started in our household. It made us think differently about the food we eat and how it’s produced. It brought a new level of awareness to us when it comes to the food we eat. And that’s never a bad thing.

Juneau, AK

We went whale watching and got surrounded by Humpback whales! 🐋 

Today we disembark Princess Cruises’ Majestic Princess at the first port of call for our Alaska cruise – Juneau! We set off on a photo safari hike along the Trail of Time in the Tongass National Forest, leading us to a lake with a breathtaking view of Mendenhall Glacier. A whale watching excursion was one of two things we were most excited for on this Alaska cruise (the other was cruising through Glacier Bay National Park, but more on that in a later vlog 😉). We capped off the day with dinner at Juneau’s famous Red Dog Saloon.

Our Alaska cruise spent half a day cruising through Glacier Bay National Park. Even though the weather was wet and misty, we were treated to epic views of the remaining glaciers, as well as ice bergs, waterfalls, and some cute little sea otters! Park rangers came aboard to narrate and give us tons of info as we cruised from glacier to glacier, as well as to provide literature and National Park stamps to passengers who wanted it. It was a crazy early morning - we were up before dawn to get breakfast and a good spot on our favorite deck – The Wake View Bar – which is shielded from a lot of the wind when the ship is moving. But it was TOTALLY worth it. The ship – Princess Cruises Majestic Princess – had hot cocoa stations set up to keep us warm as we gazed at the coastline in the damp cold. The cocoa was watery and bland, but the heat was welcome.

What do a giant snow plow, spawning salmon, and brothels have in common? We saw them all on our D.I.Y. tour of Skagway! 🏔  

Today we disembark Princess Cruises’ Majestic Princess at the second port of call for our Alaska cruise – a charming and historic gold rush town. 🚞 

Instead of an official cruise excursion, we decided to explore the town on our own and enjoy some of the local businesses we found along the way. In typical Stephen & Andie fashion, stops were made for coffee, ice cream, and to make friends with the local dogs.

We spent our last day in Alaska in the town of Ketchikan. This town gets an annual average rainfall of 140-160 inches, and I think we got half of it while we were there. 😂 This was the final port of call for our Alaska cruise on Princess Cruises Majestic Princess, and we got to go on a short hike in Tongass National Forest, saw a bald eagle up close at Alaska Raptor Center, check out Creek Street, and of course take breaks for some coffee and lunch.

When we learned that someone had built a replica of Stonehenge in their yard, and it was right here in Kentucky, we had to see it for ourselves! No, it didn’t feel like we had been transported to England, but at Kentucky Stonehenge it was pretty amazing to see the dedication that Munfordville resident, Chester Fryer, had for his creation. He scoured more than 1000 acres of nearby Hatcher Valley to find the largest boulders he could, had them hauled to his home, and then assembled to resemble the world-renowned landmark. 

He has several other stone displays on his property, as well, including Earth Mysteries, The Garden of Gethsemane, Rock Gardens, and Rock Park.

Mississippi State

Robert Johnson is a blues legend whose life is shrouded in mystery and darkness. From the day he supposedly sold his soul to the devil at the Crossroads, to his untimely death at only 27 years old, stories of his ties to the underworld fascinate fans. The final mystery of Johnson's life was his burial place. Three different churches in Mississippi claimed to be his final resting place, but as people of color were buried in unmarked graves, and the name of the church listed on his death certificate is not an exact match to any of the locations, his actual grave site remained unconfirmed until only recently. 

We got to visit the church and cemetery where it is now considered confirmed that Robert was laid to rest.

Clarksdale, MS

In the 3rd and final stop of our short Southern music tour, we go to Clarksdale, MS – the birthplace of the blues. We saw the Crossroads – that legendary place where Robert Johnson is said to have sold his soul to the Devil in exchange for domination as a blues guitarist. We tried hot tamales at Abe's. We even enjoyed our first night out listening to live music in more than a year! But what we found we loved the most about Clarksdale was the people. We met so many people and had so many genuine conversations in less than 48 hours there... it really made a huge and wonderful impression on us.

Tupelo, MS

We continue our music tour of the south with a stop in Tupelo, Mississippi, the birthplace of ELVIS PRESLEY! They still have the two-room house where he was born and spent the first several years of his life, as well as the church where he was first exposed to Gospel music. You can see a beautiful fountain, garden, and sculptures created to honor the icon at the birthplace site. Downtown, the hardware store where he got his first guitar – a gift for his 11th birthday – still operates today! They’ve even marked the exact spot where he stood as the store employee handed him the guitar and he strummed his first notes. And what do you have for lunch when visiting the birthplace of The King? Fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches, of course! Taking Care of Business – or “TCB,” as Elvis would say.
