San Francisco's new housing ordinance forces landlords to give tenants 10-day notice for evictions
In San Francisco on Tuesday, supervisors unanimously approved an ordinance that will require landlords throughout the city to give tenants facing eviction a 10-day notice, ABC7 reports.
Before filling out a three-day eviction notice, landlords must provide a tenant with a 10-day warning period instead of the current three-day notice. During that time, the tenant can correct the behavior that could lead to eviction.
Hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders skyrocketed 567% in the last year
The San Francisco Police Department shared the number of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who reported being the victim of a hate crime in the last year increased by 567 percent, The Hill reported.
There were 60 anti-AAPI hate crimes compared to eight in 2019 and nine in 2020, according to SFPD data.
San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott on Tuesday said one man was arrested in August and thought to be responsible for half of the incidents, The Washington Post reported.
“If anybody thinks that San Francisco is an easy place to come in and terrorize our Asian communities, you are sadly mistaken — and you will be held accountable,” Scott said.
SFPD will be boosting police presence at public Lunar New Year celebrations set to begin next week in San Francisco.
