After twelve long years from our students, the Class of 2021 endured and overcame not only some of life's hardest obstacles but the education systems as well. As if having to miss senior ditch day and senior picnic wasn't bad enough, many of our most recent graduating class were disheartened when they learned they wouldn't be having the long-awaited opportunity of prom.
Now over a year later, our students have framed their diplomas, said their goodbyes, and are headed off to their chosen campuses. Suitcases packed with tales of frat parties, campus study sections, and all those "this is what I did it for" moments, only to be stifled by the current regulations due to Covid-19 and the spread of the Delta variant.
Houston Community College has changed the majority of in-person and hybrid/hybrid lab courses to “Online on a Schedule” for the first four weeks. All in-person academic courses will be conducted remotely Online. On-campus support will not be available and students are advised to go to a virtual lobby. HCC Soar Safe Pledge is asking faculty and students to wear a mask, wash their hands, watch their distance, stay home if they are sick, and get vaccinated. None of which is required.
The University of Houston is offering a Cougar Vaccination Incentive Program to faculty and students. They are also asking all faculty and students to get tested at least once a week if they are unvaccinated. Mask are being encouraged to wear indoors and outdoors.
Texas Southern University is offering face-to-face and online-only classes. All students and employees are required to wear masks in all indoor facilities. To maintain social distancing guidelines classes have been minimized in size.
San Jacinto College is offering traditional and online courses for students. They are requiring that all employees and students report positive Covid results. Face coverings are being highly encouraged.
College seems exciting and full of new experiences for every graduate. However, this semester brings forth new obstacles and hurdles for students ahead. Houston campuses are trying their hardest to follow guidelines and ensure the safety and comfortability of every member involved.
