ATLANTA, GA - David Abney was born in 1955 in Cleveland, Mississippi. He and his family moved often when he was a child. However, he always lives within the northern part of the state or in the Mississippi Delta.
David's father operated a gas station, then he decided to change selling insurance. While his mother worked regularly in a textile factory. He was a graduate of Delta State University.
Abney is a former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of United Parcel Services (UPS). UPS is an American multinational company that operates as a logistics as well as package delivery that provides supply chain management services.
He held the position of CEO of UPS starting from 2014 until the end of May 2020 and previously was named as its Chairman of the Board in 2016.
Before becoming a Chairman and CEO, Abney served as the company's Chief Operating Officer. He had a responsibility to supervise logistics, sustainability, engineering, as well as all facets of UPS' global transportation network.
Currently, he serves as a Trustee of The UPS Foundation and the Annie E. Casey Foundation. He is also a member of the World Affairs Council of Atlanta as well as the Business Roundtable.
In 2019, The Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce had selected Abney as its Chairman.
In addition, Abney has been named as 100 Most Influential Georgians of 2019: Propelling Positive Change and he received an award from the Deming Cup for Operational Excellence from Columbia University in the same year. Then he was selected as the Northrop Grumman Board of Directors in the next year.
Previously, in 2018, Abney was inducted into the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans. He also has been named as one of Atlanta's Most Admired CEOs by The Atlanta Business Chronicle.
