Why Y&R needs Lucy to stick around Genoa City.

The Young and the Restless have not had a great track record with their child actors lately. Christian and Katie are invisible. Paxton Mishkind made a great Johnny, but the show saw fit to ship his character off to boarding school. Reylynn Caster was an excellent Faith recast, but her last visit barely lasted a week. And Judah Mackey is a top-notch little actor, but the dialogue he’s been given and the direction to whine non-stop has made Connor unbearable to watch. That’s why the casting of Lily Brooks O’Briant as Lucy has been such a breath of fresh air.

Lucy Brooks O’Briant: Real To Real

Instead of coming off as cloying, manipulative, precious, or precocious, O’Briant makes Lucy feel like a real kid. A teen-age girl who loves her mom, her dad, and even her crazy grandma…but one who can also see them for who they are. She is polite to Phyllis (Michelle Stafford). Heck, she’s even polite to Dad’s girlfriend, Lily (Christel Khalil). While also making it clear she would love to see Daniel and Heather (Vail Bloom) reunite.

Honest Broker

When Lucy spoke to Daniel in the park, she was able to make jokes about how she’ll Parent Trap him and Lily by taking them camping and getting lost in the woods, while making it clear that she was serious about getting her family back together. Lucy didn’t try to guilt or coerce her dad into giving her her way – that’s Connor territory – but she also allowed him to see the pain he was causing her.

Two For The Road

Being able to project multiple emotions at the same time is a skill actors twice O’Briant’s age struggle with. Not to mention playing an honest emotion that feels age-appropriate. Heather is thinking of staying in the US. We hope she does. And we hope to see a lot more of Lucy, as a result.
