Jacklyn Zeman Joins Soap Hub for a Fireside Chat

Zeman joined GH in late 1977 as nursing student Barbara Jean “Bobbie” Spencer. Fresh off a stint as tragic Lana McClain on New York-based One Life to Live, Zeman moved 3,000 miles across the country to Los Angeles, where GH shoots. The rest is soap opera history!

Head writer Douglas Marland and producer Gloria Monty thrust Zeman’s Bobbie into the forefront of the story canvas. Determined to have a better life, Bobbie, who had worked as a prostitute in Florida, was studying to become a nurse and wanted to marry law student Scotty Baldwin (Kin Shriner). Bobbie made rival Laura’s (Genie Francis) life a living hell and drafted her brother Luke (Anthony Geary) to help her achieve her goal of keeping Scotty and Laura apart. Eventually, Bobbie gave up her desire for Scotty, but today, the two are good pals.

The Bobbie/Scotty/Laura triangle, which played out through most of 1978, was instrumental in skyrocketing GH to the top of the ratings from its previous lower-rated position and near-cancellation.

Along the way, Bobbie went from bad girl to heroine. She completed her nursing degree and found love many times, most notably with her late husband, Dr. Tony Jones (Brad Maule). Zeman has been a mainstay in Port Charles for decades as well as being a fan favorite. She’s received four Daytime Emmy nominations for her work as Bobbie, including a nod for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 1998. Zeman remains an important part of the GH canvas, as Bobbie is currently planning the 2023 Nurses Ball.
