Community Connections: Preservation Austin
Preservation Austin is a nonprofit organization based in Austin, Texas that exists to empower Austinites to shape a more inclusive, resilient, and meaningful community culture through preservation. The organization works to advocate for the protection of historic structures, neighborhoods, and landscapes through education, outreach, and advocacy efforts. Preservation Austin was founded as the Heritage Society of Austin in 1953 and has since saved structures downtown like the Driskill Hotel.

In 1982, TxDOT discovered the remains of a female from the Paleo-Indian period at a location in the Leander, Texas area. Some locals and archaeologists came to refer to the remains of the woman as “Leanne,” “Leanderthal Lady,” and “Wilson-Leonard Remains.”The age and location where the remains were uncovered indicate that she is a Coahuiltecan ancestor, and naming her with a colonized name is very difficult for many to hear. We now use the Indigenous name, Aptzāi Pil’, meaning Ancient One in the Coahuiltecan language.

The Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) was passed in 1978 to ensure that Native children who were removed from their homes were adopted by Native families or community members. ICWA was written because as many as 25–30% of Native children were being removed from their homes prior to 1978. The passage of this law was too late for our family.
