BERKLEY, MI – In September 2021, Berkley's Parks and Recreation Department will collaborate with the mParks Foundation for the "Move So Everyone Can" Virtual 5K.
The mParks Foundation was founded in 2002 with the goal of providing funds for accessible recreation and education. The Foundation's mission is to make recreation accessible to all Michigan residents, regardless of their ability. Until today, the mParks Foundation has given over $3 million to Michigan communities to help them build accessible playgrounds and waterparks.
The Virtual 5K event will raise funds for local recreation and park opportunities. The money will be used to purchase much-needed picnic tables in the City parks.
According to Parks and Recreation Director, Theresa McArleton, these funds are said to be a welcome addition to the team's efforts to improve accessibility and comfort in City parks by installing picnic tables.
The mParks Virtual 5K (3.1 miles) is a race that communities can participate in from anywhere by running, walking, skating, SUPing, biking, surfing, hand-cycling, or swimming. Residents in Michigan have the freedom to choose their own location, race, pace, and time. The only requirement is that it be finished by September 30, 2021.
Participants have until the end of September to complete the Virtual 5K, but donations and fundraising can begin now.
Under the name "City of Berkley Parks & Recreation," the Parks & Recreation Department will receive half of the registration fees and all donations made by those who sign up to participate. This Virtual 5K is a great way to stay active while also contributing to the City's picnic table fund.
