DETROIT, MI — Skinphorea, a well-known facial bar and spa, as well as a beauty educational hub, has finally held its grand opening at 1620 Michigan Ave in Corktown. Jessie Hayes-Stallings, Skinphorea Founder and CEO, and Shareese Shorter, Skinphorea Co-Owner and Director of Operations hope to fulfill Detroiter’s needs for facial treatments.

Started off merely as an online business in 2014, they transformed their virtual operation into an actual location in Royal Oak two years later. Now opening a new flagship, it offers plenty of spa-like features; from acne clinic and laser hair removal, beauty products, to a signature happy hour feel.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan was present at the ceremony. “Jessie and Shareese created Skinphorea to redefine their industry and provide a place where everyone is welcome,” said Duggan.

As a versatile facial bar, their aim is to be the go-to place for everyone cross-gender to take good care of themselves. “We look forward to being in assistance to Detroiters, whether they are coming in for facial care or embarking on a new career,” said Hayes-Stalling.

In addition to that, the new location will also serve as an educational hub. The apprenticeship program, called Skinphorea University, will be conducted there from time to time. It provides esthetician licensing for those wishing to become skin care professionals. To support their operations, they plan to employ 22 employees for the managerial and esthetician positions.

Skinphorea received a total of $30,000 cash grant from Motor City Match and is among 129 open brick-and-mortar businesses to have been financially supported by MCM. Those businesses are mostly owned by minority groups and women, as well as Detroit’s locals.

“Motor City Match continues to have a tremendous impact on Detroit,” said Kevin Johnson, President and CEO of Detroit Economic Growth Corporation. “Today, we are creating an even stronger MCM program to support Detroit’s small business community.”
