DETROIT, MI - Metro Detroit was recently hit by massive flooding, causing thousands of homes to be severely damaged. If you want to do your bit in getting them back to their feet, United Way has curated a list of organizations you can join as a volunteer.

  • Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD)
    Monday and Wednesday, 10 a.m to 2 p.m

With VOAD, you will help the struggling residents in the Jefferson-Chalmers neighborhood and execute the most important actions after a flood.

On Mondays, you will be assigned to the homes of senior citizens and small children in the neighborhood. The goal is to remove debris from their houses, which will be taken to the curb.

Meanwhile, if you choose to volunteer on Wednesdays, you will be tasked to remove debris and muck-outs. These actions include cleaning and sanitizing their basements, which will determine whether the other crews need to perform mold removal.

Training and tools will be provided.
The meeting point is at the parking lot of Detroit's Finest Coney Island at 13337 E. Jefferson Ave., Detroit, MI 48215.

Tools, and meals for overnight volunteers, will be provided but you need to bring your items.
