Many people think that just because you eat a vegetarian meal, they are eating healthy foods. Yes, going vegetarian can be much better for you, but many people replace meat with more pasta and cheese. They often do not realize what they should be eating, so they substitute meat for snacks.

If you are going vegetarian for better nutrition, here are some tips for eating healthy.

Start small. You might want to try going vegetarian for one meal a week. Then, you might find it easier to add more meals until you eat only vegetarian meals.

Try vegetarian meat substitutes. You should try to eat tofu, fermented soy, and other vegetarian substitutes such as tempe. Many of this is made into burgers, hot dogs, bacon, and other “meats” so that you can still feel like you are eating meat. Also, eating these things will help you get enough protein in your diet.

Eat a variety of foods. Many people who become vegetarians think that they have to survive on salads. However, there are many other choices. You should be sure to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. You should try to eat legumes, beans, and whole grains. In fact, the more color in your diet, the better it is. As long as you have a varied diet, you have a better chance to get all of the nutrition that you need.

Start with meals that are already vegetarian or are easy to make that way. Many dishes are almost vegetarian, such as spaghetti and baked ziti. Other times, you can use tofu or soy in the place of meat. Many times, all it takes is substituting one or two items in recipes.

When you go out to restaurants, stick to vegetarian meals so that you can learn what different things are out there to try. If you are unadventurous, start only eating vegetarian at restaurants. Many have several vegetarian meals on their menu. Hopefully, that will help you realize what you can and cannot eat.

Be ready to experiment. Get a few vegetarian cookbooks. Expand your horizons and try some different recipes. Experiment with different and new vegetables.

Look online and join groups of other vegetarians to help you. You are not the only one struggling. It may help to get support from others like you. There are probably plenty of Facebook groups where you can meet a lot of other like-minded people. You might be amazed at what you can learn from others going through the same thing that you are.

Stay away from snacks and other processed foods. They are not good for you in general. Often, many people who try to become vegetarians often just snack and end up gaining weight because they are not eating well.

Take a multivitamin to help ensure that you are getting enough nutrition. Multivitamins are made to help where you are lacking in your diet.

Going vegetarian can be simple or difficult. It can also be healthy (if you do it the right way) or unhealthy if you end up snacking instead of eating balanced meals. If you are just starting to think about it, it might be good for you to start small. Start with one vegetarian meal a week, or only order vegetarian meals when you go to restaurants. Try to start replacing meats with fermented soy or tofu meat. You can also get creative and try out a new vegetarian cookbook. Just be sure to have a lot of variety in your diet so that you are getting the nutrients that you need. The more color that you have in your diet, the better off it will be.
