Walmart, one of the largest employers in the country, has recently provided a new incentive for it's new drivers at warehouses and store locations across the nation.
Currently, drivers are eligible to receive as much as $110,000 in earnings, while completing their first year of employment with the company. The salary raise comes on the heels of one of the largest trucker shortages in history, with the industry seeking to fill at least 80,000 positions over the next year or so.
In order to help with the shortage, Walmart created a drivers training program called the Walmart Private Fleet Development Program, to allow associates to gain their CDLs and become a driver for the retailer. After completing the program and becoming a full time employee, new drivers can qualify for an education expense benefit where they will receive the cost of tuition for a college degree as wll as books.
To complete the initial requirements to obtain the commercial driversl license, applicants must be willing to go through the full twelve week instruction period, typically costing about $5,000 via outside driver training schools, after which you will be hired as a private driver.
While starting salaries may be $110,000 a hefty sum in and of itself, that doesn't include sign-on bonuses or other employee perks across many locations. These lucrative positions are not just available to outside candidates, as Walmart has been known to hire from within, adding as many as 7,000 new drivers from previous departments according to a senior vice president.
