2020’s Retrogrades are Game Changers

As Mars throws the pitch to Venus, we’ve got to know our strike zone.

The Planets Are Not Doing Anything to Us

It’s not that the planets are controlling us or pulling strings behind the scenes, but they are currents of energy that are flowing all around us. Think about how we feel after a day in the sun, or the night of a Full Moon. It’s not cool to blame our problems on these celestial bodies; which is why this article is not going to be another fear mongering retrograde post.

If you’ve heard the hype around retrogrades, forget it. If you have no clue what I’m talking about, even better. Let’s clean the slate and start with the basics.

"Retrograde motion is an apparent change in the movement of the planet through the sky. It is not real in that the planet does not physically start moving backwards in its orbit. It just appears to do so because of the relative positions of the planet and Earth and how they are moving around the Sun. Normally, the planets move west-to-east through the stars at night. This is referred to as prograde motion. However, periodically the motion changes and they move east-to-west through the stars. We call this retrograde motion."-starchild.gsfc.nasa.gov

Basically it looks like the retrograde planet is moving backwards but that’s just an illusion. Those fear based “all-the-horrible-things-that-will-happen-during-Mercury-retrograde” blogs are also illusions.

A retrograde is like pulling back and aiming, before shooting an arrow.

Sometimes we need to step back from something before we can move forwards. We have to take time to reassess, rethink and regroup; this is exactly that retrograde periods are about.

Life may ask us to slow down, find a new way, or look t something from our past during a retrograde, thus leading to frustration for those wanting to barrel forwards, but even if it doesn't look like it, we are all still moving forward. In order to study for an exam, we have to go back and review the course content- so imagine thinking that reviewing is a waste of time?

The interesting thing about 2020 is that we experienced a Venus retrograde from May until the end of June, and a Mars retrograde from September through November.

Mars and Venus Are Teammates

They play way different positions and have opposite approaches but ultimately they are allies. They’re working towards a common goal and in a sense they exists as aspects within ourselves. Although the symbols for Venus and Mars are often referred to as the male and female signs we aren’t talking about gender here. We are talking about the varying aspects within ourselves and how they form our approaches to life.

Venus Is the Receiver, the Catcher Behind the Plate

Although I am not a big baseball fan, so please correct me if I am wrong, but it’s the catcher who gives the signs to the pitcher. They are are the ones who not only call the shots but they protect home base. Venus energy is about being centred and allowing things to come to us. It’s the womb that receives life or the Earth’s soil that welcomes the seedling home.

From May 13 through June 27 Venus was retrograde which means how we approach receiving has shifted. Fundamentally this retrograde in Gemini was connected to our relationship to the ethers.

Are we receiving a breath? Are we letting that idea trickle in? Are we really hearing what that other person is saying? Are we even listening? How are we talking to ourselves?

We’re fresh out of this Venus retrograde energy which might like uncharted territory. Some arrows are launching forward, but because we are still waiting for Mars retrograde to continue the story we could feel like we’ve been left hanging.

In 2020 Relationship to Self Is Key

This doesn’t mean being selfish, ignoring or causing harm to others. But it does mean taking an honest look at how we relate to ourselves. 2020 is a year of looking in the mirror and coming to terms with who is staring back at us. This is not easy, and at times relationships to ourselves can feel like a full blown battle field. And this is where Mars comes in.

Mars is action oriented.

It’s external.

It’s the pitcher who gets the game going by throwing the ball.

Basically, we are in some middle world right now. Not in the old ways, and not at all used to the new. It’s the intermission of the show that is 2020. Some of us feel good about the pause, others might be itching for the show to start again. Either way, there’s no point rushing it.

September 2020 Brought a Change of Pace

Mars stationed retrograde September 9th through November 13th. Remember this is the backwards time. It’s the time of all things “re” (which includes relax). Mars is the planet of action and it can stir us up. It’s the fire that is roaring and ready to go, but during this retrograde period there were some torrential downpours.

Did it could feel like this rain was putting out our fire? What if it was providing some much needed hydration? Our world is dry right now, so even a small spark can start a wild fire. There’s a purpose to passion. There’s a reason to feel full of rage. But this recent Mars retrograde could have helped us to avoid some unnecessary destruction.

The players are getting a new game plan (we are the players).

It’s time to get ready for training camp. We are going to be learning new ways to throw the ball. We are ready to make the catch. For now our role is to stay at home base. This means finding our personal landing place. What lane are we in? If we are trying to look at others we will start swerving all over the road.

Let’s look at the differently at the plays. Remember the game has changed. And get ready to give it our all this fall. There’s hope, but there is also a need to let things go. Certain game plans have run their course. It’s time to look ourselves in the eye and regroup.

It’s okay to admit we were wrong. It’s incredible to make a mistake and own up to it. The only thing not to do this year is act as though we’ve got it all figured out. Because the Universe has some new extra innings up it’s sleeve.
