Question: What’s the one thing that is certain every year in spite of pandemics, lockdown and festivities?

Answer(if you don’t already know): New Years’ Resolutions

People will always set them-you probably have- and never achieve them (at least not the year they set them).

Year after year after year.

And it’s sad. Because we start the year with a lot of enthusiasm and belief that it’s going to be a great year. Only to fall by the way side two months in.

Why do people end up dropping their New Year Resolutions?

  • Their resolutions are not specific enough
  • They just write/say them without taking any action
  • They don’t believe they can
  • They don’t know why they want those things in the first instance
  • Their resolutions are unattainable at the time they set them
  • They have no support from other people

In this post, we’re going to try and fix the last reason. Sometimes, the people we know don’t support our goals because they don’t think those goals are reasonable, achievable or timely. And sometimes, they just don’t know about our plans.

So what’s the one thing that can propel you to keep pushing (no matter how small) without social support?

It’s words. Words from people who have been where you are and are willing to share from their wealth of experience. These words will give you clarity. They will inspire you and they will motivate you.

Here’s a selection of quotes with vital factors that will help you achieve the resolutions you may have made.

Commitment and Consistency

We only set goals because we want to achieve something. And consistency plus commitment are two qualities that would get you there. To succeed at whatever you set out to, you must be willing to do the things other people don’t want to. I think these quotes on consistency and commitment would help you with whatever resolutions you may have made. Here’s why.

Successful people aren’t born that way. They become successful by establishing the habit of doing things unsuccessful people don’t like to do.” ―William Makepeace Thackeray

“Success isn’t always about greatness. It’s about consistency. Consistent hard work leads to success. Greatness will come.” – Dwayne Johnson
“Successful innovation requires commitment, consistency, and collaboration”
Monique Beedles, What The Hell Do We Do Now?: An enterprise guide to COVID-19 and beyond
“Persistence and consistency are like nail and finger. Always point forward even when the hand/arm is tired.”
Goitsemang Mvula
By being consistent with your efforts, you will find that things will start to change in what will appear to be subtle ways because we are less likely to take notice of things when they no longer challenge us.

Building Successful Habits

To achieve your goals, building successful habits is important. Because you might be willing to be consistent but if you don’t have habits to support your will, your goals are a long way off.

Imagine you want to have breakfast by 8:00 every morning but it’s not your habit to be up by 6:30, 7:00 or any time before 8. Achieving that goal becomes almost impossible.

“I have learned that champions aren’t just born; champions can be made when they embrace and commit to life-changing positive habits.” ―Lewis Howes

If you’re wondering just how to build these habits that support consistency and commitment, here’s a quote to help with that.

“You leave old habits behind by starting out with the thought, ‘I release the need for this in my life.’ ” ―Wayne Dyer
“You’ll never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.” ―John C. Maxwell

The path to success often isn’t straight and it would take some grit to achieve what you set out to do. Yet, the moment you have a change in mindset and begin to see the requirements of success as something exciting rather than a chore, you begin walking

the steps to success.

“Perfection of effort is not required, by the way. It is the consistency of attempting to work these tools that brings the progress. It’s like anything else. If I want to tone muscle, lifting a ten-pound weight a few times every day will move me toward my goal much quicker than hoisting a fifty-pound barbell once a week. Yes, it really is true: “Slow and steady wins the race.” Just try a little, every day. You’ll see.”
Holly Mosier
Courage is the most important of all the virtues because without courage, you can't practice any other virtue consistently. Maya Angelou

It takes courage to sacrifice certain things to reach your goal. It all becomes worth it in the end though if you have the right goals in the first place.

In the next post, I discuss the timeless strategy that would help you choose the right goals and achieve them. Did any of these quotes strike a chord in you? Share them in the comments
